Last-Minute ITR Filing Checklist for AY 2026-27

Before You File: The Complete Checklist
Filing your ITR does not have to be stressful. Use this checklist to make sure you have everything ready before you start. This covers both ITR-1 and ITR-2 for AY 2026-27.
Personal Details
- PAN card — your 10-digit alphanumeric PAN
- Aadhaar number — linked to PAN (mandatory for e-filing)
- Bank account details — account number, IFSC, bank name (for refund credit)
- Contact details — mobile number and email linked to income tax portal
- Address — as per PAN records
Income Documents
Salary Income
- Form 16 from employer — how to read it
- Salary slips (if Form 16 is not yet available)
- Form 12BB (investment declaration submitted to employer)
Interest Income
- Bank interest certificates — savings account and FD interest
- Post office deposit interest — NSC, SCSS, etc.
- Interest on income tax refund (if any, from previous years)
House Property Income
- Rent agreement and rent receipts (if receiving rent)
- Home loan interest certificate from bank (for deduction under Section 24)
- Municipal tax receipts (if paid)
Capital Gains (ITR-2 only)
- Broker P&L statement — for stocks and derivatives
- Capital gains statement from mutual fund AMC
- Property sale/purchase deeds (if applicable)
- Cost of acquisition records for unlisted shares or other assets

Dividend Income
- Dividend statements from stocks and mutual funds
- Note: dividends are taxable as "income from other sources"
Deduction Documents
Section 80C (up to Rs 1.5 lakh)
- EPF passbook or employer deduction proof
- PPF deposit receipts
- ELSS mutual fund statements
- Life insurance premium receipts
- Tuition fee receipts (for up to 2 children)
- Home loan principal component from loan statement
- NSC purchase proof
- 5-year tax saver FD receipt

Section 80D (Health Insurance)
- Health insurance premium receipts — self, spouse, children, parents
- Preventive health check-up bills (up to Rs 5,000, within 80D limit)
Section 80CCD(1B) (NPS)
- NPS contribution receipt — additional Rs 50,000 deduction
Other Deductions
- Section 80E — education loan interest certificate
- Section 80G — donation receipts (with institution PAN and 80G registration number)
- Section 80TTA/80TTB — savings account interest (auto-computed from bank statements)
Tax Payments & TDS
- Form 26AS — download from TRACES or income tax portal. Verify TDS credits.
- AIS (Annual Information Statement) — check for any unreported income
- TIS (Taxpayer Information Summary) — review suggested income figures
- Advance tax challans (if you paid advance tax during the year)
- Self-assessment tax challans (if paying remaining tax before filing)
Pre-Filing Checks
- Choose your ITR form — ITR-1 or ITR-2? See which form to file
- Choose your tax regime — old or new? See regime comparison
- Cross-check TDS — Form 16 TDS should match Form 26AS
- Verify bank account — pre-validate your bank account on the portal for refunds
